Chapter 7

Oleg and Joas were glad to be travelling with the children of Ribe. Eva didn’t speak to them, she just watched them with wary eyes, but Christian, Erland and Riki were all friendly. They were happy to talk about what life in Ribe was like and asked the two warriors about life in Hedeby.

“So life isn’t that different in our two towns.” Joas smiled as he walked next to Riki.

“Or at least it wasn’t before Rena came.” Oleg said bitterly. He was walking next to Erland. Joas and Riki were at the front of their party with Oleg and Erland behind them. At the back, Christian walked beside Eva, leading his pony with Wifrith lying across its shoulders.

Eva hadn’t spoken a word to anyone since they had decided to bring Oleg and Joas on their journey with them. Christian had tried to make her feel better about the situation, but Eva refused to respond to any question or attempt at conversation.

“Where did she come from?” Erland asked.

“Rena? Nobody knows. She was washed up on the shore one day. Viggo found her when he was out riding. It was just after his second wife had died.” Joas said, trying to remember exactly what had happened.

“Was she shipwrecked?” Riki asked.

“There wasn’t any sign of a ship in the water or on the shore. She never says where she is from or where she was going when she washed up on the shore.” Oleg frowned.

“You don’t think she is human?” Christian asked.

“No, I think she’s a havsrå.” Oleg said firmly.

“And I’ve told you that you need to stop saying that.” Joas sounded very frustrated as he spoke.

“We aren’t in Hedeby now, I can say what I like and no one is going to punish me for it.” Oleg shrugged.

“You think she is one of the keepers of saltwater? A mermaid?” Erland laughed.

“It’s not as ridiculous as it sounds. Just remember a dragon just crushed half a forest to land to talk with us.” Oleg said defensively.

“Why would a havsrå want to start a war between Ribe and Hedeby?” Eva snorted.

“My brother, Gerulf, he told me a story about Viggo before he was banished. He and Gerulf were just a year apart in age. Viggo was the oldest and was sent across the sea to Lund to meet a girl that my father wanted him to marry. Viggo didn’t want to go on his own, so Gerulf said he would go too.” Joas began.

“There was a storm three days into the voyage and the ship was in danger of sinking. Viggo was thrown overboard and saved by one of the havsrå. The sailors thought she would bring them good luck so she was invited on to the ship. Gerulf said that she was a beautiful creature and she seemed to like Viggo a lot. She followed him all over the ship.

“The captain of the ship was from Ribe; he was the brother of Pav but had been sent away from the town with some of his crew after they had tried to cheat during the trials.
